Meal
Moths are commonly found in stored food products such as grains (rice, corn,
wheat, oats, barley) cereals, bird seed, dry pet food, nuts, dried fruits,
candy, crackers and more. Adult moths are generally seen flying around or
resting near the infested food source. These moths can easily enter most
packages, even if unopened, and will lay their eggs directly on the food
source.
When the eggs hatch into larva, they feed on the food.
At first, the larva cannot be seen with the naked eye, but they can grow
to become about ½ an inch long. When the larvae are ready to pupate,
they leave the food source to form their cocoon. Adults are birthed from
the cocoon and after mating, the process starts all over again. Female Meal
Moths can lay 50-200 eggs each.
